Europe is by far one of the biggest travel destinations in the world. From the beauty and cuisine of France to the history and culture of Italy, Greece, Ireland, and so many other beautiful destinations, Europe is truly a sight to behold. There is much to experience in Europe, certainly far more than could be experienced in a single trip. One way many travelers have found of getting the most from any trip to Europe, however, is to travel in the off season. In addition to lower fares and accommodations, many travelers also find that they are met with friendlier locals, fewer tourists, and better access to many historical landmarks, all of which add up to a more enjoyable trip.
While the offseason in Europe can be cold, there is also what is known as the shoulder season. This is the period just between peak and off seasons, where the temperatures are still exceptionally comfortable and all areas of interest still operate their typical hours but there are fewer visitors. This season usually encompasses April through early June as well as September and October.
Even during colder off peak travel, Europe is an excellent destination. Whether you are looking to explore St. Mark’s in Venice or to see the majesty of Rome, you can do so virtually alone by traveling in the offseason. This means better photo opportunities as well as a better chance to ask guards and tour guides the questions you have always wanted answered about the history of these majestic countries.
While many landmarks maintain shorter hours during the off season, you will typically find that both lines and commutes are shorter, giving you the ability to fit many more activities into your day. The lack of tourists also provides the ability to take longer tours, which is especially helpful when visiting vast landmarks like the Louvre. The offseason also provides travelers a much better opportunity to obtain tickets to cultural events, from operas to theatre and music shows.
Europe in the offseason is truly a sight to behold. While many tourists still prefer the area in the summer, there is a great deal of benefit to travel in the other seasons. From the mild shoulder season to the colder winter season, lower fares and accommodations couple with smaller crowds and more opportunities to provide just the vacation many travelers are looking for. |
